| Reverse description | The bronzital centre depicts a stylised frontal view of the three medieval towers of San Marino — Guaita, Cesta, and Montale — rising from a crenellated curtain wall rendered in a bold, graphic style with detailed brickwork. The motto LIBERTAS appears on a band beneath the towers, and the mint mark R is visible to the lower right within the centre disc. The acmonital outer ring bears the date 1987 at the top, two decorative rosette stops at either side, and the denomination L.500 in large characters at the bottom. |

| Additional information |
San Marino has issued collector-oriented coinage since the 1970s as a deliberate revenue strategy, and by 1987 the republic was producing annual series targeting the numismatic market rather than circulation. This bimetallic format — unusual for Italian-sphere coinage at the time — preceded the widespread European adoption of the technology that would later define the euro coinage infrastructure.
