San Marino's bimetallic 500 Lire series of the early 1990s was issued in the final years before the republic joined Italy in adopting the euro — though as a microstate, San Marino struck its own lira coinage under a customs union agreement with Italy, giving its pieces legal tender status in both territories. Annual themed issues from this period were produced in relatively small quantities and frequently pulled from circulation by collectors almost immediately, meaning genuine wear survivors are actually the harder find.
