| 正面描述 | A detailed view of the three towers of San Marino — the Guaita, Cesta, and Montale — rendered in a stylized, modernist relief rising prominently in the central field. The crenellated fortifications are depicted with bold, angular lines characteristic of the engraver's contemporary artistic approach. The circular legend REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO runs along the periphery, interrupted by dot separators, with the date 1976 inscribed in the lower portion of the field. The engravers' signatures, Molteni and Pioli, appear discreetly in the lower field. |

San Marino issued a series of annual silver 500 Lire pieces throughout the 1970s, each year carrying a distinct theme tied to an international event or cause — 1976 being no exception. The series exploited Italy's obligation under the 1862 monetary convention to accept San Marino coinage at face value, which made these pieces simultaneously legal tender and de facto collector issues.
The 1976 emission coincided with the Friuli earthquake of May that year, which killed nearly a thousand people within a hundred kilometers of San Marino's borders.
