Francisco Morazán was executed by firing squad in 1842 after a failed attempt to reunite the Central American federation he had governed — making him simultaneously the most celebrated and most tragic political figure in Honduran history. This 1992 issue marks the 150th anniversary of his death, part of a broader regional commemorative effort that saw Guatemala and El Salvador issue parallel gold pieces honoring the same man their own governments had helped destroy.
