The Banka e Shtetit Shqiptar — the Albanian State Bank — was itself only established in 1945, replacing the Italian-era Banca Nazionale d'Albania after liberation. This 1947 series was among the first issues fully under the new communist government, and the 500 Lekë represented serious purchasing power in a country whose economy had been comprehensively disrupted by occupation and civil conflict.
A currency reform in 1965 redenominated Albanian lekë at 10:1, rendering these notes obsolete and triggering large-scale destruction. Surviving examples from the 1947 series are correspondingly scarce.
