Lunar calendar commemoratives were a deliberate part of that effort, coupling Buddhist-inflected Burmese tradition with hard currency collectibles aimed almost entirely at the export market.

Domestic circulation was never the point. Myanmar's parallel exchange rate crisis in the late 1990s made silver coins functionally absurd as currency inside the country.
