Angola's first post-independence banknote series, of which this is part, was issued in 1976 — the same year the MPLA government established the Banco Nacional de Angola as the sole monetary authority, replacing the colonial Banco de Angola. Thomas De La Rue handled the printing, a fairly routine assignment for the London firm but notable given that the contracts had to be negotiated during an active civil war in which Cuban troops were already deployed on Angolan soil.
The kwanza itself was introduced on 8 January 1977, replacing the escudo at par. Notes dated 1976 were prepared in anticipation of that transition.
