| Reverse description | A naturalistically rendered eagle, depicted with open beak as if calling, is shown perched on a gnarled branch extending across the lower portion of the field, rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished background. The bird's plumage is detailed with careful feather work across the wings and breast. The three-line legend FREEDOM OF SPEECH occupies the right portion of the field in serif lettering. A small engraver's initial mark is visible at the base of the design near the branch. |

Part of a commemorative series issued by the Bank of Zambia in the early 1990s, a period when Zambia was transitioning from Kenneth Kaunda's one-party UNIP state toward multiparty democracy following the 1991 elections. Frederick Chiluba's MMD government, which won that election on a platform of political liberalization, oversaw several such issues — the subject of this coin carrying obvious political resonance for a country that had legally suppressed press freedom and political opposition for nearly two decades.
