| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse presents a portrait vignette of Carl Robert Jakobson (1841–1882), Estonian national awakening leader, journalist, and agronomist, set against a guilloche underprint. To the right of the portrait, the masthead of his political newspaper Sakala is rendered as a decorative motif, while below appears a bound sheaf tied with a ribbon bearing the inscription "Written by C. R. Jakobson"; flanking the sheaf are allegorical figures of a woman with a sickle to the left and a man with a scythe to the right. The denomination 500 KROONI, the issuer name EESTI PANK, and the dates of Jakobson's life are inscribed alongside the notation PRESIDENT NOUKOGU LIIGE and the year 1991. |

Estonia's 1991 500 Krooni was part of the first post-Soviet currency issue, introduced in June 1992 as the kroon replaced the ruble at a fixed rate of 10 rubles per kroon — a deliberate currency board arrangement pegging the kroon to the Deutsche Mark at 8:1. Thomas De La Rue printed the series in London well before the official switchover, the notes held in reserve while the political and logistical mechanics of monetary separation from the USSR were finalized.
The currency board structure gave the kroon unusual credibility for a newly independent state, and it held without devaluation until euro adoption in 2011.
