Kremnica's mint — founded in 1328 and one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world — was the primary source of thalers for the Hungarian Crown throughout the early modern period. The thaler coinage struck there fed trade networks stretching from Vienna to the Ottoman frontier. This 1999 issue marks the 650th anniversary of that minting tradition, situating Slovakia's modern central bank within a lineage that predates the Slovak state by six centuries.
