Samuel Mikovíni was an 18th-century Slovak cartographer and engineer whose maps of Hungary — produced for Matthias Bel's monumental Notitia Hungariae novae historico-geographica — were among the most scientifically accurate produced in the region during his lifetime. He determined geographic coordinates using astronomical observation rather than dead reckoning, a methodological standard that set his work apart from most contemporary Central European cartography.
This coin was issued in the final year before Slovakia's currency entered its euro transition countdown, making the 2000-dated commemorative series the last substantial silver program under the koruna before monetary policy shifted irrevocably toward Maastricht criteria.
