Issued in the final months before Czechoslovakia's peaceful dissolution on January 1, 1993, this coin was struck by a state bank that would cease to exist almost simultaneously with its release — the Státní banka československá was formally wound up as the country split into separate Czech and Slovak successor institutions. The coin thus carries the name of a nation already in the process of terminating itself.
Czechoslovakia had a legitimate claim to tennis distinction: the country produced a remarkable concentration of world-class players during the 1970s and 1980s, including multiple Wimbledon champions.
