Papua New Guinea's central bank has issued gold commemoratives in the Bird of Paradise series across several decades, but the 2020 issue appeared during a year when the country's gold export revenues were severely disrupted — Ok Tedi and Porgera, two of PNG's largest producing mines, both faced major operational suspensions. Porgera was forcibly closed by the national government in April of that year when Barrick Gold's lease was not renewed, triggering an international arbitration dispute that remained unresolved well into 2021.
