Suriname's 2000 series represented the final chapter of the gulden before the country redenominated in January 2004, replacing the gulden at a rate of 1,000 to 1 with the newly introduced Surinamese dollar. The 500 gulden was effectively the highest-value note that mattered in everyday commerce during those last years — inflation had been severe through the 1990s, and by 2000 the currency had lost the vast majority of its purchasing power from a decade earlier.
De La Rue's production of this series is unremarkable technically, with watermark and thread being the minimum viable security package for the period. The note was not long in use.
