Opmerkingen

De Javasche Bank was the Netherlands East Indies' central bank, but by the time this note was printed, the political ground had already shifted. Indonesia declared independence in 1945, and the bank's role on the main archipelago was effectively terminated by the early 1950s. This 500 Gulden was issued specifically for Nieuw-Guinea — the western half of New Guinea, which the Netherlands retained after transferring sovereignty over the rest of the former colony in 1949, a territorial carve-out that would remain contested until 1962.

Enschedé's involvement guaranteed competent intaglio work, but the series was short-lived. The currency was rendered obsolete when the Netherlands ultimately ceded the territory to UN administration.
