Haiti's 1973 gold commemorative series was issued under Jean-Claude Duvalier, who had assumed the presidency-for-life just two years earlier following his father François's death. The coins were largely aimed at the international collector market — hard currency Haiti desperately needed — rather than domestic circulation. Most examples went directly from the Port-au-Prince ceremonies into dealer hands abroad.
KM#110 shares its specifications with the 1973 FAO-aligned issues, part of a broader push by developing nations in that period to mint gold collector pieces tied to humanitarian themes as a revenue mechanism.
