Obverse description Central depiction of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the celebrated Hellenistic marble sculpture housed in the Louvre, rendered in high relief against a polished field. The goddess Nike is shown in a dynamic forward-striding posture with great outstretched wings, her drapery billowing and clinging to her form in fine detail. To the lower right of the figure, the republican monogram 'RF' (République Française) appears in bold incuse letters. The legend 'LA VICTOIRE DE SAMOTHRACE' is inscribed in two lines along the left field, vertically flanking the sculpture.
