Surrounding the Sun are concentric rings representing the orbital paths of the planets of the solar system, with selectively gilt raised spheres positioned along the orbital bands to denote each planet, including a ringed planet representing Saturn near the lower arc. The outermost ring is finished in polished gilding and frames a dark annular zone bearing engraved constellation lines, star patterns, and month inscriptions arranged around the circumference.
