The Democratic Republic of the Congo has become one of the more prolific issuers of large-format precious metal coins in the modern market, operating essentially as a licensing vehicle for European minting houses — in this case almost certainly the Coin Invest Trust pipeline out of Liechtenstein, which has produced the bulk of the DRC's high-weight gold program. The coins are legal tender in name only; no 500-franc denomination of this size has ever meaningfully circulated, and the issuing authority retains little involvement beyond the license agreement.
