The Banque Nationale du Katanga existed because of one of the most dramatic secessions of the post-colonial period. When Moise Tshombé declared Katanga independent from the newly formed Republic of the Congo in July 1960 — within days of Belgian withdrawal — he needed functioning institutions fast, and a central bank with its own currency was a statement of permanence. Waterlow & Sons in London handled the printing, a firm with deep experience in producing currency for politically contested governments.
The secession lasted until January 1963, when UN military pressure forced reunification. Notes from this series had a very short window of legitimate circulation.
