The Marquesas Islands have never had a currency of their own — they fall under the CFP franc system administered by the IEOM, the Paris-based emission authority covering French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna. This 500-franc piece is a collector issue rather than circulating coinage; the IEOM began producing themed commemoratives for the overseas territories partly to generate revenue and partly in response to collector demand for regional identity pieces that standard CFP circulation coins never provided.
