Two stalks of millet or sorghum flank the shield on either side. A dove in flight carrying an olive branch surmounts the shield. The date 1969 appears beneath the shield in the field. Guinea's Olympic coinage program of 1969–70 was part of a broader wave of African nations issuing commemorative silver for the 1972 Munich Games — released years in advance, these were unambiguously aimed at the collector market rather than circulation. Guinea under Sékou Touré had been largely cut off from Western financial institutions since independence in 1958, and hard-currency generation through numismatic exports was a practical revenue strategy, not ceremonialism.
The series was struck by Vereinigte Deutsche Metallwerke in Germany, not by any Guinean facility.
