| Obverse description | Central design features the five interlocking Olympic rings, each enclosing a symbolic vignette representing a past host city: Helsinki 1952 (stadium and obelisk), Melbourne 1956 (rearing horse), Roma 1960 (she-wolf with S.P.Q.R. inscription and Olympic rings), Tokio 1964 (wrestlers or athletes in action), and Mexico 1968 (Aztec calendar motif). Above the rings, a panoramic skyline of Munich with prominent church spires and civic buildings evokes the 1972 host city, while an Olympic torch with flame appears at the base. The legend REP.
