Guinea's 1970 commemorative silver program was issued just over a decade after independence from France, during Sékou Touré's increasingly authoritarian single-party state. The series was produced largely for export — collector markets in Europe and North America — rather than domestic circulation, as Guinea had effectively severed its financial ties with the French monetary zone in 1960 by refusing to join the CFA franc system, a decision that left the country economically isolated and reliant on foreign currency earnings wherever it could find them.
