| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a detailed rendition of the Aztec Sun Stone (calendar stone), faithfully reproducing its concentric circular composition. At the centre is the face of the solar deity Tonatiuh with an extended tongue, enclosed within a square cartouche flanked by four panels representing the four previous suns. Surrounding this central motif are two rings bearing the twenty day-signs of the Aztec calendar, rendered in high relief with crisp detail. An outer band of elaborate geometric and symbolic ornamentation encircles the entire composition, filling the field to the raised rim. |
