The BCEAO issued a wave of commemorative silver pieces in the early 1990s timed to international sporting events — a pattern common among West African franc zone members who had little native numismatic tradition but recognized the export market for such pieces. These were struck for collectors abroad, not for circulation in Senegal, Mali, or any of the seven other member states. Most examples reached the market through European dealers.
The 1994 FIFA World Cup, hosted jointly by the United States, drove a surge of licensed commemorative issues from dozens of issuing authorities with no direct connection to the tournament.
