Additional information

Benin's commemorative franc CFA issues of the mid-2000s were produced under the country's membership in the West African Economic and Monetary Union, with the actual striking contracted to European mints rather than any facility on Beninese soil. The Ludwig van Beethoven subject has no historical connection to the issuing nation — these pieces belong to a wave of theme-driven collector coins that BCEAO member states licensed to outside distributors, trading the issuing authority's name for a share of the seigniorage.

Beethoven died in Vienna in 1827, and the 2005 release coincided loosely with no significant anniversary of his birth or death.
