Beschrijving voorzijde The coat of arms of Cameroon is centrally displayed, featuring a shield charged with scales of justice and surmounted by a five-pointed star, flanked by crossed fasces with axe heads. The bilingual national motto appears flanking the shield: 'PAIX / PEACE' to the left and 'PATRIE / FATHERLAND' to the right, with 'TRAVAIL / WORK' above. The circular legend 'REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN' arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '500 FRANCS CFA' is inscribed in bold relief along the lower field. The date '2024' appears in the upper central field, with the fineness mark 'Ag 999' and mint mark 'mw' visible near the base of the arms. The entire design is set against a richly textured wavy-line background rendered in contrasting silver and black coloring.

Beschrijving keerzijde A full-color representation of the Diaethria clymena butterfly — commonly known as the 88 butterfly for its distinctive wing pattern — is depicted at center, shown with wings spread to reveal vivid red upper wings and boldly patterned black-and-white lower wings bearing the characteristic numeral-like ocelli. The butterfly is framed within a convex magnifying lens rendered in relief silver, with its handle extending toward the lower right of the field. The surrounding field is rendered in full color, depicting lush tropical foliage in varying shades of green, with a large pink peony blossom in the lower right quadrant. The scientific name 'Diaethria clymena' is inscribed in italic lettering along the upper right portion of the field.

Aanvullende informatie

The 88 butterfly — Diaethria clymena — takes its common name from the numerals that appear on its hindwing, a coincidence of pattern that has made it a recurring subject in natural history illustration since at least the eighteenth century. Cameroon's use of it here continues a well-established tradition among Central and West African states of issuing high-relief, collector-targeted silver pieces through the BEAC monetary framework, with actual domestic circulation never the intent.
