The Banque de l'Indo-Chine was a private institution — not a colonial government body — operating under French state concession, which gave it the unusual authority to issue currency across multiple territories including Cochinchina, Tonkin, Annam, Cambodia, Laos, and later New Caledonia and other Pacific possessions. That one note could serve as legal tender across such a geographically scattered empire required the issuing bank to maintain separate branch redemption infrastructure rather than relying on any single treasury.
Printing by the Banque de France brought intaglio quality that most colonial issuers couldn't access. Gaspérini's engraving work on the obverse is from a period when his output for French and French-affiliated issuers was extensive; Marguerite Dreyfus, known professionally as Rita, handled the reverse — a rare instance where a female engraver received explicit credit in the plate work of a major colonial series.
