The Institut d'Émission des Comores had a brief operational life. It was established following the unilateral declaration of independence in 1975 and replaced by the Banque Centrale des Comores in 1981, meaning the entire output of this issuing authority spans just a few years. Notes bearing this name are transitional by definition — they document the gap between French overseas territory and functioning sovereign central bank.
Printing continued with the Banque de France through this period, an arrangement that persisted well beyond independence and reflected the Comoros franc's continued peg to the French franc via the franc zone agreements.
