Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Flemish painter Bernard van Orley (1492–1542) in three-quarter view to the right, rendered after a period likeness, occupying the right portion of the note. To the left, a guilloche vignette in brown tones contains a scene of Saint Michael slaying a dragon. The denomination "500" appears in large numerals at lower right within an ornate guilloche cartouche, with the bank title "NATIONALE BANK VAN BELGIE" and denomination "VIJFHONDERD FRANK" lettered across the upper portion.

Reverse description Intaglio portrait of Margaret of Austria in three-quarter view, rendered in fine line engraving with her characteristic white coif and ruff collar, occupying the right half of the note. Behind her, an architectural vignette in warm ochre tones illustrates the Palace of Malines (Mechelen). To the left, an elaborate multicolour guilloche rosette underprint frames the large numerals "500" and carries the French-language denomination "CINQ CENTS FRANCS" at upper centre.
