Thomas De La Rue printed this series across a six-year window spanning Madagascar's difficult transition away from single-party rule under Didier Ratsiraka — a period of economic stagnation and recurring balance-of-payments crises that kept the ariary chronically undervalued. The dual denomination labeling, francs over ariary, reflects the 1961 monetary reform that set the conversion at five to one, a ratio that remained official long after most Malagasy had stopped thinking in francs.
Pick 71 is among the more common survivors of the era, though later dates in the range are noticeably scarcer than earlier ones.
