Issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Iraqi Army, founded in 1921 under the British Mandate administration. The army's creation predated Iraqi independence by over a decade, a political awkwardness the Ba'athist government — then barely two years into its second grip on power following the 1968 coup — was content to gloss over in favor of nationalist celebration.
