The 14 July Revolution of 1958 overthrew the Hashemite monarchy and killed King Faisal II, ending a dynasty installed by the British following World War I. This 500 Fils piece was struck the following year as a direct commemorative of that coup, issued by the new republic under Abd al-Karim Qasim. It is one of the earliest coins struck under the Iraqi Republic and among the largest silver pieces in the modern Iraqi series — a deliberate statement of the new government's break from monarchical coinage.
The .500 fineness is unusually low for a prestige commemorative of this size, suggesting production economics or silver supply constraints in the immediate post-revolution period.
