Bradbury Wilkinson held a long relationship with Banco de Portugal, and this note — the ninth printing of the 500 Escudos design — reflects the kind of production continuity that was genuinely unusual for mid-century European currency. Rather than renegotiate or redesign, Portugal kept returning to the same New Malden press with the same plates, accumulating print runs across nearly two decades.
The Pick 162 series spans a remarkably long issue life for a high-denomination note. Later printings within the series are often harder to attribute precisely by date, as Banco de Portugal did not always publish print run data publicly.
