An engraved portrait of Serpa Pinto occupies the right field, with the bank seal at left and the Portuguese Coat of Arms at centre. The denomination and issue date are inscribed within the lower portion of the design, framed by ornate scrollwork borders.

A central oval vignette carries an allegorical seated female figure gazing toward a steam-and-sail vessel at sea. Guilloche panels to either side bear large numeral counters "500", with the bank title spanning the full width above, the denomination legend below, and the printer's imprint at the foot.
