Opmerkingen

Issued in 1976, the year São Tomé and Príncipe gained independence from Portugal — July 12, 1975 — this 500 Escudos note was among the first issues of the newly established Banco Nacional, printed by Thomas De La Rue in London before domestic monetary infrastructure existed. The escudo was retained as the currency unit initially, replaced only in 1977 by the dobra at par.

De La Rue's involvement was typical of Anglophone and Lusophone African states in this period, providing continuity of print quality during the institutional gap between colonial authority and functioning national banks.
