This design ran for thirteen years across two very different political realities — the 1966 signature combinations fall under the Estado Novo, while the 1979 issues postdate the Carnation Revolution and the subsequent banking nationalizations of 1975. The Banco de Portugal itself was nationalized in September of that year, which reshuffled the signing authority and accounts for the unusually large pool of second-signature variants on the later date.
The appearance of Maria Manuela Matos Morgado Santiago Baptista among the 1979 signatories is worth noting — female signatures on Banco de Portugal notes of this period are rare, a reflection of how recently women had entered senior administrative roles in Portuguese banking.
