Issued to commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the Arsacid dynasty of Armenia — the branch of the Parthian Arsacids who ruled the Armenian kingdom from roughly 54 AD until 428 AD, when Sassanid Persia abolished the monarchy outright. Armenia under the Arsacids adopted Christianity as the state religion in 301 AD, the first kingdom in the world to do so, a political calculation by Tiridates III as much as a theological one.
At 155.52 grams of .999 fine silver, this is among the heavier commemorative issues produced by the Central Bank in its early post-Soviet years, when Armenia was still establishing its monetary institutions following independence in 1991.
