Part of the Central Bank of Armenia's 38-coin series honoring each letter of the Armenian alphabet, this issue corresponds to the letter Հ (Հայ, the first letter of "Hayastan" — Armenia's name for itself). The alphabet was created by scholar and monk Mesrop Mashtots around 405 AD, commissioned to provide Armenians a script for translating Christian scripture and displacing Greek and Syriac in liturgical use. The series ran across several years, with individual letters issued in limited quantities that vary slightly across the run.
