Part of a 38-coin series issued by the Central Bank of Armenia to commemorate each letter of the Armenian alphabet, itself one of the most precisely dated writing systems in history — created by Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD, with the exact year recorded by contemporary chroniclers. The alphabet was devised specifically to translate the Bible into Armenian, breaking the country's dependence on Greek and Syriac ecclesiastical texts.
Բ is the second letter, carrying a /b/ phoneme, and retains a form largely unchanged from Mashtots' original script.
