500 Dram

Armenia's 1999 banknote series, of which this 500 Dram is part, was printed by Thomas De La Rue during a period when the country was still stabilizing its currency framework following the catastrophic hyperinflation of the early 1990s — the dram itself had only been introduced in 1993, replacing Soviet-era rubles circulating at a time of acute economic collapse.

De La Rue's security specification here is modest: watermark and thread, without the more elaborate features the printer was deploying on other sovereign contracts by the late 1990s. Nothing unusual about the production, but the relative simplicity reflects the fiscal constraints Armenia faced when commissioning the series.
