Reverse description The reverse reproduces the central design of the gold medal awarded at the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896. A winged allegorical female figure, identified as Nike (Victory), is depicted riding a quadriga of winged horses in dynamic motion across the field. She holds aloft a laurel wreath in her outstretched left hand and a herald's staff in her right, with the Acropolis and a radiant sun visible in the background. An Ionic capital appears at the lower right, and the engraver's initials Κ.Κ. are inscribed below the central design. The legend ΑΘΗΝΑ 1896 curves along the upper periphery, the year 2000 appears to the right in the field, and the inscription ΤΟ ΜΕΤΑΛΛΙΟ (The Medal) is placed in the lower exergue.
