Obverse description Central field bears multiple lines of incuse Greek inscription naming the occasion and denomination, with a small stylized floral or torch motif above the text. The denomination ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ 500 is prominently displayed in the lower central field in bold numerals. A circular legend around the periphery reads ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ at the top, while the lower arc carries the date 28 ΜΑΙΟΥ 1979 and the inscription 10ο ΜΕΛΟΣ Ε.Ο.Κ., commemorating Greece's accession as the tenth member of the European Economic Community. The text in the central field references Prime Minister K. ΚΑΡΑΜΑΝΛΗΣ and the phrase ΣΤΑΘΜΟΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΠΟΡΕΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΕΘΝΟΥΣ (Milestone in the Progress of the Nation). The lettering throughout is rendered in a stylized Greek epigraphic manner reminiscent of ancient inscriptions.

(Translation: GREEK DEMOCRACY MILESTONE TO THE PROGRESS OF THE NATION K. KARAMANLIS 500 DRACHMES 28th OF MAY 1979 10th MEMBER OF E.E.C.)
Reverse description A seated male figure, rendered in a naturalistic sculptural style, is depicted resting within the massive forked trunk and spreading branches of a large olive or plane tree. The figure, possibly representing a philosopher or allegorical personification of Greece, sits contemplatively amid the tree's gnarled limbs and foliage. The design fills the entire coin field with no legend or inscription, allowing the artistic composition to dominate. Fine detail is evident in the rendering of the bark texture, leaves, and the figure's drapery and musculature. A small engraver's monogram or signature mark appears at the lower left of the tree trunk.
