Reverse description A seated male figure, rendered in a naturalistic sculptural style, is depicted resting within the massive forked trunk and spreading branches of a large olive or plane tree. The figure, possibly representing a philosopher or allegorical personification of Greece, sits contemplatively amid the tree's gnarled limbs and foliage. The design fills the entire coin field with no legend or inscription, allowing the artistic composition to dominate. Fine detail is evident in the rendering of the bark texture, leaves, and the figure's drapery and musculature. A small engraver's monogram or signature mark appears at the lower left of the tree trunk.

Additional information

Greece acceded to the European Economic Community on January 1, 1981, but the negotiations that made it possible were concluded in May 1979 — the occasion this coin was struck to mark. It was the first southern European nation admitted to what had been, to that point, an exclusively northwestern bloc, and the political significance in Athens was considerable given that accession came just five years after the collapse of the military junta.
