Reverse description A finely detailed figure of a Shar-Pei dog, rendered in high relief, stands in profile facing right at the centre of the deeply mirrored proof field. The upper portion of the field bears the denomination legend '500 DOLLARS' arranged in a wide arc, flanked by the two Chinese characters '壬戌' denoting the cyclical year of the Dog in the traditional sexagenary calendar. The lower segment of the field carries the inscription 'HALF OUNCE FINE GOLD' in small capitals. The entire design is enclosed within an inner beaded border.
