The pineapple watermark distinguishes this series from the later polymer issues and from earlier printings that carried a different security watermark. Thomas De La Rue had printed Jamaican currency continuously since independence, and by the mid-1990s the relationship was well-established enough that the note's security architecture remained relatively conservative by contemporary standards — no metallic thread, no color-shifting ink.
The 1990s were turbulent for the Jamaican dollar. Severe banking sector failures mid-decade, including the near-collapse of several major domestic institutions requiring government intervention, kept inflation elevated and eroded the real value of the 500-dollar denomination faster than the Bank of Jamaica could issue revised notes.
