Central vignette presents a historical streetscape of Port Royal, with a colonial-era map of the harbour and surrounding coastline above it; the scene is rendered in brown intaglio tones against a pale multicolour underprint. Denomination numerals '500' appear in guilloche cartouches at each corner, with foliate decorative elements running along the lateral borders. |

The P#81 series was introduced as Jamaica's highest circulating denomination during a period when inflation had substantially eroded the purchasing power of lower values — the 500-dollar note, worth roughly USD 9 at the time of issue, was a practical necessity rather than a prestige denomination. Thomas De La Rue handled the printing throughout the series run, consistent with Jamaica's long-standing contractual relationship with that firm dating back to independence-era issues.
The hummingbird watermark designation distinguishes this issue from earlier 500-dollar types and reflects the Bank of Jamaica's use of endemic fauna as an authentication device — the doctor bird, Jamaica's national bird, appearing as a security element rather than purely decorative motif.
