The Chartered Bank was absorbed into Standard Chartered following the 1969 merger that created the parent group, but Hong Kong subsidiary notes continued circulating under the old name well into the early 1980s — this issue being among the last. The $500 denomination sat at the top of the practical circulation range for retail Hong Kong commerce, and the series was produced by De La Rue at a moment when the colony's note-issuing arrangement still permitted three separate commercial banks to issue their own currency alongside one another.
P#80 is the final series before Standard Chartered branding fully replaced the Chartered Bank name on Hong Kong issues.
