Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a large intaglio vignette of a mythical phoenix rendered in brown and orange tones, occupying the right half of the note against a multicolour guilloche underprint in gold and cream. The bank title 'Standard Chartered Bank' appears at the upper centre in English, with the Chinese name 香港渣打銀行 below, alongside the promise-to-pay clause and the date '1st JANUARY 1993 HONG KONG'. Two facsimile signatures of the Chief Financial Officer and Area General Manager appear at lower centre, with the serial number printed in brown at lower left and lower right.
